AdBlue® has become a hot topic of conversation for Fleet Managers, Farmers, and in fact for anyone who’s bought (or is about to buy) a new diesel vehicle in the last 12 months.
The reason?
New Euro6 regulations came into force in September 2015 that are specifically designed to reduce the amount of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) levels produced on the roads. In order to achieve that reduction it is now compulsory for new diesel vehicles to use a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system. An essential part of this system involves the use of AdBlue® or DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) as it is better known in the US.
By using AdBlue® as part of a SCR system an engines (NOx) levels can be reduced significantly. EG, a vehicle with a figure of 180mg/km can see that reduced to as little as 80mg/km. At the moment figures for the actual amount of AdBlue® needed relative to fuel consumption are still very thin on the ground, but some reports are saying that for every 10 litres of fuel, 1 litre of AdBlue® will be needed.
If you look at the diagram below you can see how the AdBlue® system works under the bonnet of an Audi Q7.
