23,000 drivers per year breakdown because of AdBlue® in the UK

According to AA’s statistics, last year they attended a massive 23,000 breakdowns purely because drivers had run out of AdBlue®. They even had reports of drivers putting AdBlue® into the diesel tank.

The numbers seem amazing, but it appears that many dealerships are either not explaining to customers how to manage AdBlue® in their vehicle properly or in some cases they’re simply not mentioning the fact that most diesel cars built after 2015 are equipped with a SCR (selective catalytic reduction system) and require AdBlue® for fear of scaring customers away with an extra expense at such a critical time economically for diesel cars.

It’s also a common problem when drivers use a hire car or fleet vehicle and are not informed about the need to top up AdBlue® regularly. In fact most drivers will need to refill their car with AdBlue® at least once between services.

All cars that use AdBlue® will display a warning sign on the dashboard in plenty of time to get the tank re-fueled, but it seems many modern drivers not used to opening the bonnet for anything and are simply ignoring the warning sign. The problems arrive when the AdBlue® runs out as then the car won’t start.

The message from the AA is to keep the car topped up regularly. Keep an eye on the warning lights on the dash and if necessary keep a bottle of AdBlue® in your boot for emergencies.
