AdBlue® liquid is manufactured to reduce the amount of NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) produced by diesel engines. It works as part of a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system and is injected into poisonous diesel emissions at a crucial stage of the process.
The AdBlue® liquid reduces the amount of harmful NOx chemicals pumped into the atmosphere from cars and trucks by up to 90%, so there are obvious benefits to the environment in using AdBlue® and with electric vehicle practicalities still very much unresolved, AdBlue® and the technology around it will continue to be used for some time to come.
For many people who drive a car with a SCR system fitted the first time they become aware of AdBlue® is when the little light on dashboard starts to flash telling you to top it up.
Incidentally, all cars that use the SCR system will have a separate AdBlue® tank, so never pour AdBlue® directly into the fuel tank, it will cause serious damage. If in doubt about the whereabouts of your AdBlue® tank contact your car dealer or the manufacturer directly to find out where it is. On some cars it is directly next to the fuel tank opening, on others it is in the boot or under the bonnet.
Depending on how you drive your vehicle will depend on the amount of AdBlue® you use, but a good rule of thumb is thought to be around one gallon of AdBlue® for every 750 miles. You don’t need to be a mathematic genius to realise that even if you have a small fleet of vehicles you can save a lot of money by buying your AdBlue® in bulk.
